1938 PGA Championship

Runyan def. Snead 8&7.

This clip is fascinating. Look at Runyan's unusual swing and Snead's wristy putting stroke. Back in the day golfers all had their own style and played with more feel. They weren't groomed into cookie-cutter swing robots by high-paid instructors and video analysis.

In a certain way players today definitely are 'better' than players back then, but then also I think something in the game has been lost as a result. Today's equivalent of Runyan trouncing Snead 8&7 would be Corey Pavin whoopin' Tiger. But while that was possible back then, in an era when each golfer could play his own way and accuracy and shotmaking counted, that can't happen today in a time when power absolutely dominates. On the other hand, look what a wonderful short game will do for you. That part hasn't changed, though there's no question that the scales are definitely tilted more in favor of the long ball than ever.

It's also great to see a stymie. That looks like a blast! Bring back the stymie!
